MLK: Wall of Honor
Black America had a lot of hope in President Kennedy helping us in our fight for civil rights and justice. His election would push most Black Americans from the republican to the democratic party, where they remain. President Kennedy, King, and the president's brother Robert, were all killed in the 1960's, - November ‘63, April ‘68, June ‘68, respectively.
Their commitment to civil rights and their deaths are what propelled many Black families to honor them on their living room walls.
There were three photos that hung on the walls of many Black American families in the late 1960's until some point in the 1980s. One was of Martin Luther King, Jr. Another was President John F. Kennedy which sometimes included his brother, Robert Kennedy. The final, and probably the one that was on the wall first, was 'white Jesus'. Now this one is a conversation for another time(smile).
The photo of my grandmother and mother is approximately from 1969-1971. I use to wonder why it was in the bedroom. My great grandmother was the matriarch at this time, so maybe that is where it had to go. Later it was moved to the living room that included a photo of President Kennedy and his brother Robert, Senator.
After King's assassination in 1968, many Black families displayed photos of King in their homes in honor of his fight to bring justice to Black America via civil rights and to building a better and equitable America.
